Encaustics Workshop with Daniella Woolf

I justfinished an exciting encaustic workshop!
            Theworkshop was given by Daniella Woolf through North Country Studio Workshops at Bennington College.
What EnErGy! Our group bonded though inspirational excitement in the studio, and by Daniella'shumor, wit, and knowledge.
Most ofus started off as virgins and ended up walking on the moon!
            Whatan experience! If you do not know what encaustics is, go here or here.
Youcan use any rigid porus surface to create your collage on. We discovered youcan do it on paper and fabric too.
            Wedid a group collage on rice paper. Everyone made one 5” horizontal paper collagepiece, and then we ‘encausticated’ them as a hanging scroll.

The finished scroll is ready to contribute to the silent auction to benefit NCSC.
This was one of those experiences that can change your work. I love collage and have worked with fiber and paper collage using traditional mediums. This adds another dimension to that. Encaustic sinks the collage, creating an air of mystery or translucent layering that I have yet been unable to achieve. I'm looking forward to exploring this new medium.

I received the most delightful feedback viva email today. I would like to publish it- anonymously of course, with my answer.

"Dear Wen,

I have become familiar with your work through the Mt. Sunapee League fair, and the open house held at the mills every year. I have only recently discovered your website and blog, and realized that there is a whole world of work behind you that I have yet to see. Your wonderful trees. I love your blog website, with all of its interesting links, and information, forming the textural world that shapes, and defines your work, in addition to the quilting world which I have researched, and worked with a little in the past, but its nice to know that whatever i came to know as "the quilting arts" doesn't really ever end in one defined approach, however different each piece is. I gave up on the quilting aspect because I found that I couldn't achieve the softness?,, or less bulky? feel that I wanted. I wanted the piece to look more cohesive , rather than many separate pieces.

See, this is what I really enjoy about your work, you have achieved that cohesiveness, even with seperate pieces within one art piece, that reminds one of fabric, and at the same time, painting.

I don't know that I have found yet what your educational experience has been. I would be interested in knowing how you finally arrived( if there is such a thing in art), upon your wonderful collages-artwork as it is today?"

My education continued after collage when I graduated with a BA in Home Economics, emphasis on Child Development and Interior Design. I am largely self taught and but have taken many workshops from my shero's such as Joan Schultz, Mary Taylor, Fran Skiles, Dorothy Caldwell, Susan Hammond West, and Nancy Crow among others. I find taking workshops from artists stimulating to my art, my inner sense of what is possible.

I try not to copy but let their teaching gestate and come though my art in my own voice. This, for me, defines a true artist. One who continues to grow within their field. Sure there will be side trips down medium roads, maybe parallel roads, but continuing to explore, to try new things, to turn things upside-down.

I encourage the same from others, when I teach. That, to me, is the highest goal, to stimulate my student's own voice, their own courage in art making. to explore their inner reaches.

I become a tool, a guide, hopefully, a muse.

Education is not all though. Take time to take time. To go outside. Breathe. Clear space to learn what excites you. To see inside. Then create!

Nearly all creative possibilities are related to the muses that inspire us.
I enjoy a daily inspirational reading from the Daily OM- here
This one is particularly notable and thought I'd share with my readers.

Inspiration is an intangible yet inseparable part of the creative process. Nearly all creative possibilities are related to the muses that inspire us. The ancient Greeks believed that all creation, whether artistic or scientific in nature, was motivated by goddesses who served as the literal embodiment of inspiration. These were the Muses The givers of the creative spark. We still rely on muses to drive the creative process, though ours may take a diverse range of forms. People we meet, intriguing ideas, movies, books, nature, and cultural ideals all have the potential to awaken our imaginative minds. When we are touched by our muses, we understand viscerally that we are capable of producing our own unique kind of greatness.

Many people move through life unaware of the presence of their muse. This lack of awareness can be compounded by the fact that we may have one muse that remains with us throughout our lives, multiple muses that inspire us concurrently, several muses that come and go as necessary, or a single muse that touches us briefly at specific moments. You will know that you have found your muse when you encounter a force that makes you feel courageous enough to broaden the range of your creativity. The presence of this force will erase your self-doubt and motivate you to give your thoughts and feelings form. Should your muse continue to elude you, however, there are steps you can take to increase your chances of falling under its inspired influence. If you surround yourself with people who support you, keep a pen and paper handy, immerse yourself in culture, and brainstorm frequently, you will soon reconnect with your muse.

Once you have identified your muse, embrace it by giving yourself over to the creative inspiration it provides. No matter what you are moved to create, you will find that neither fear nor criticism can penetrate the wonderful bliss that goes hand in hand with the act of taking an idea and turning it into something the whole world can enjoy.

2012 Word for this Year

My word this year is 'transition'.

Art- This year will be my fallow year. A year of renewal, review, reevaluate. Space. Percolate.

Personal- Reduce.

We will move out of our home of 35 years to a new home that we will be building. This requires commitment and energy toward a not entirely uncreative endeavor. This will require de-cluttering of a major scale. We will scale down from outside studio, outside office, summer cottage, and home. Perhaps even my father's house. He will be 90 in Feb. Shadow thoughts.

Looking though things stored away for many years is like a past life review. Treasures sought after for so many years must be evaluated, given to family, friends or recycled. I have joined freecycle in 2 states. Decisions to be made on keeping or tossing are hard. I may need to weed though several times to winnow it down.

Transition indeed!

The Salmon Falls Mill Building where my studio, #336, is located will have it’s annual Open Studios Event this Nov 19 & 20- 10-5. This year, instead of new work, I will feature a host of items, a quick art sale of seconds and slightly older works- really priced to fit your budgets, tons of my collage baggies that have been so popular and my usual line of vintage and gently used clothing.

Creating Thermal Fax using Photoshop Options

I enjoy Photography and use it in my work in a number of ways- printing fabric, collage, inkjet printing and thermal fax for examples. This post deals with several options to create the Black and White image you will need to create a Thermal Fax Silkscreen. The resulting image is then printed with either a copy machine that has carbon in it's ink or a laser printer. The carbon copy is needed in order for the Thermal Fax machine to burn a screen. Remember to make small tests to see if a particular machine will burn a screen.

The original image is first simply converted to a Black and White image. Go to Image >Adjustments >Black and White. I duplicated this image to use so I could retain the original Black & White image to return to to use again if I chose.

For the first option, I used Filters. Filter > Sketch >Stamp. This image resulted which could be used for a negative silkscreen. All the black areas would be burned. This is where the paint would be screened.

I prefer a positive image. To create this, go to Image >Adjustments >Invert. This will invert the colors so the subject in this photo is in black. The result is too thick, not detailed enough for what I had in mind.

As with most everything, there are different ways to do things. For above image, I returned to the original Black & White image and went to Image >Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast. A small window with a slider will pop up. I slid the brightness first to lighten the image, than the contrast to darken the subject. I needed to up contrast several times to get a high contrast or dark subject. I decided this image was too delicate.

For this final image, I again returned to the original Black and White Image. This time I went to Image >Adjustments >Curves. A pop up window will show a scale. I slid the small triangle to the right, while watching my image. When I saw the desired darken image, I went to Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and upped the contrast to create a dark high contrast image. This highlites all the veins in the leaf that I found so attractive. Perfect! This result has the detail I want and is dark enough to create a great Thermal Fax SilkScreen!

I am Autumn

Confused leaves bounce, swirl widely. Explode outward, rush toward my car, then suddenly lift skyward, divide and race away back into their interrupted flight.

Reminding and remembering that bright spot of youth that gives one immorality.

All has been and will be that way forever. Time stands still when you're young.

All options open, choices behind doors that swing open at the touch.

Vivid, intense and free.

My view of the past is longer now. I can see backward toward my youth,

Spring and Summer.

Seeing my triumphs and failures- feeling those lumps where I could have chosen differently- but with now with acceptance for who I am and new patience for who I was.

Now, I apply the brakes momentarily, and pop out of my head.

Running crazy leaves, brings me awareness, shows me my memories.

The privilege of these backward glances.

I am middle age.

All that was limitless before now has a deadline. Options are controlled by life circumstances, finances and health.

Resources are marshaled by choices made years ago.

Yes, there are losses but there are compensations too.

It was good. I feel blessed. I have been lucky.

I get back in my car, renewed by a subtle urgency and drive to my studio. There, I will get lost for a while longer with my colors, textures and this overwhelming desire to create.

Realism in Fiber

I love Lisa's work. I fell in love with the spirt of her Scythian Sprite sculpture some years ago. They were the first people to ride horses.

These young female warriers were so fierce that the Romans thought they were demons.

Her work seems so real it's hard to believe it's fabric. I hope you enjoy it too.

Lisa Lichtenfels studied traditional oil painting at an early age, attended the Governor’s School while a teenager and continued her education at the Philadelphia College of Art. There she met Judy Jampell, who was becoming well known for her three dimensional soft-sculpted facades. Inspired, Lisa was going to be an illustrator until the prospect of independent animation and filmmaking fascinated her. Graduating with majors in Illustration and Film, she was immediately hired by the Disney Studios as an apprentice animator.

While working at Disney she developed three-dimensional figurines with posable skeletons for stop-motion animation. Like Judy Jampell’s constructions, they had nylon stocking skins. Lisa left Disney to explore the potential of these techniques, expecting to return to animation in a year or so; but it has now been over twenty-five years, and she is still working in nylon and feels she has only barely begun to realize what is possible in the medium.

Lisa works in her studio of her Victorian home in Springfield, Massachusetts. There she creates startlingly realistic sculptures with a wide variety of subject matter, including fantasy, myth, humor, and portraiture. The individual figures range from less than 5 inches to life-sized figures of over 5 feet tall. She also does large environmental installations with many characters. In this she is helped by her husband, the poet Jeremy Ward Wilson, who does her carpentry.

Visions- Interpretations

November 4, 2011 to January 22, 2012

This juried biennial presents art quilts by Visions members.

Shaking the Tree of Imagination was accepted into this prestigious exhibit.

I layered 3 separate images in Photoshop, and collaged digitally. The
photographs were divided on the computer and printed using a Epson 2400 onto pre-treated inkjet cotton broadcloth. They were assembled on batting, cut apart and physically collaged. I printed more sections on silk organza, divided and fused those to the piece. Each section was creatively stitched with a intuitive spontaneous design. I added metallic paint accents, drew with a fine nozzle bottle. The final pieces were mounted on a hand painted backing of cotton duck.

I love exploring the mix of mediums, of paper and fabric, both fiber.

New Leaf

My new work, New Leaf, is mounted on painted cotton duck. I used regular acrylic paint on the duck, slightly diluted so that it isn't too stiff. Then hit it with a nozzle bottle to provide details echoing the work on the interior panels. This was applied when the painted duck was slightly damp, to allow some diffusing of the marks.
The white layer is 140lb cold press water color paper, torn, painted and accented with my special medium blend using coffee grounds. I painted the edges, from the back, for accent and highlighting against the mounting material.

The three interior pieces are unknown fabrics garnered from a upholstery sample stack. I painted the edges with black gesso for a matte finish, echoing the edge treatment of the watercolor paper. I used a old credit card to spread light weight molding paste in a thin layer. This was textured and dried. In addition, I painted, added mediums, and additional painted transparent tissue papers. A center section of silk organza overlaps the center with free unbound edges. All of the panels were glued and stitched to the watercolor paper and cotton duck, for added texture and accent. The edges undulate and come forward from the mounting.

My Fab Fabric Painting Workshop at ProChem in Fall River, MA was wonderful, albeit much condensed.

I need to commend my flexible participants in maintaining the best of spirits and bending to the will of hurricane Irene. We cut our 3 day class, first down to 2 1/2 days than just 2 in order to beat the hurricane's driving wind and rain. Less working time, same instruction. Lots of humidity. But still tons of wonderful fabric and samples for future reference.

Ok- This art quilt's colors have bugged me from the get go. I like the format and quilting but pink?

So I decided to use my current protectant of choice- Satin Varnish by Liquitex- and coat the piece with it. Usually it deepen colors, at least on my digital fiber work. Not so here. It deepened it alright but too dark. I forgot to cut it with water- 1-1 proportions. Yikes!

Distressed, I left it to work on over projects. I returned to my Digital Fiber. I am creating another piece which I can not show here as it may be an entry where I need a virgin art work. It's a digital collage. I am really liking this new way of working and I will present it in my new format of tying sections of the work together. It's tones are in neutral palette. Unusual for me as earthy colors are more my thing but it is subtle.
Inspried by my recent conversation to neutral palette, I decided to paint the sucker.

LNHC Sunapee Fair is 75 Years Old This August!

The League of New Hampshire’s annual Crafts Fair, in Sunapee NH is one of the finest and most prestigious craft events in the country. It will celebrate its 75^th birthday this year. The nine day fair features both traditional and contemporary fine craft. Members must be juried in. I have been a member for 20 years.

I always remember fiddling around with cloth- from making doll clothes to my own and even in a art project in HS using commercial felt. I went to collage for Home Economics.
I was not interested in sewing at all. My emphasis was Interior Design and Child Development. I still feel child dev should be a required course in High School, side by side with sex ed. I think if folks understood what a child is capable at each age/stage, there would be less child abuse.
When I got my different teaching positions, I attempted to change the mind dulling experience of Home Ec into a more stimulating experience.

Examples. For a sewing class- the students designed their own pillows, created the patterns and made them. It turned out like soft sculptures- from letter pillows, pencils and odd items. Boys too!

We hung them from the ceiling for parents night. Very cool. I'll never forget the principle's face. I guess he was expecting aprons.
Another time in Basic Cooking. We were discussing how what you see affects the pleasure of the meal i:e presentation.

The students made chicken, potatoes, some veggie and cake. We colored the chicken red, the potatoes green and the cake was purple with multi color icing. We invited the principle to this meal. Everyone insisted the chicken wasn't cooked- even though they cooked it. The potatoes tasted minty because they were green. It was a good lesson.

So I evolved into quilting in the early 70's with the same approach. Use any fabrics and machine quilt. Then I moved to NH where I was told this was 'wrong'. I should use cotton and hand stitch so many to the inch. Unfortunately I listened. Drat.
So I learned to match my corners, miter borders till I grew bored and moved on.

I fell in love with folk art quilts and created them for my children's baby quilts. My second child's quilt, Jonathan's Dream was invited to the Quilt Museum in Paducak KY. I didn't do it because it was my son's. I still have mixed feelings on that. Oh well.

After I ran out of folks and babies to make for, I began the process of exploration. The guilds weren't allowing machine quilting yet so I left that supportive environment to experiment on my own.
When the digital camera, and personal computers came into existence, I embraced photography ( an old love ) on cloth and ran with it.

Today, quilts are finally overcoming their old-fashioned reputation. Once perceived as blocklike, follow-the-rules fabric sandwiches, contemporary art quilts — with the emphasis on art — break the conventional code.
The quilt artist seeks to innovate by applying art principles and art experience from other areas like drawing, painting, and sculpting as well as working with the tactile richness of fabric and by adding the textures of quilting stitches

This exhibition sent the viewer into the realm of desire satisfied, taken up and beyond measure.

Repetitive of design leads one into a meditative state. Standing mesmerized, when I thought I couldn't take in another exhibit! I was caught in a web of design, an environment.

Leaves are captured and sewn, or encased in organza.

Multiple silk pods, stretched on forms, cascading in a fiber waterfall. Very kinetic.

This dizzying array of forms and sculpture unified in materials, texture, creative imagination and the ability to delight.
